A magical time to visit Brisbane

Brisbane’s Christmas stocking is packed full to the brim with a spectacular line-up of free events this festive season.

The whole family can come and celebrate the magic of Christmas with time-honoured traditions as well as having the opportunity to create some new.ones. There will be Christmas carols, fashion showcases, food and craft markets, children’s workshops and of course, photos with the main man himself - Santa.

From Friday 3 to Friday 24 December seasonal harmonies will fill the Queen Street Mall with a Christmas Songbook showcase and spread into the city streets with the Merry Melodies pop-up music program. The ever popular IGA Lord Mayor’s Carols in the City on Saturday 4 December will see some of Australia’s biggest stars light up the Riverstage.

On Friday 3 December the Burnett Lane Fashion Showcase will add a touch of style to the festive season. Members of the public will be able to see a stunning selection of Brisbane’s emerging and established fashion designers bring one of Brisbane City Council’s newest revitalised spaces to life.

Also on Friday 3 December the Lighting of the Christmas Tree in King George Square will feature excerpts from Queensland Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker.

On Friday 10 December some of Brisbane’s best international musicians will take visitors on a World by Night tour. King George Square and Burnett Lane will be abuzz with music, food and gifts from across the globe. Visitors can expect to enjoy a special performance by the winner of 2010’s Q Song World Music Category.

From Saturday 11 to Friday 24 December, the ‘Little Christmas Stars’ kids’ workshops will provide a host of free interactive children’s activities at the Queen Street Mall stage from 10am to 2pm daily. For a Christmas celebration with a twist, join the ‘Little Christmas Stars’ in their pop-up storybook land as kid’s rappers perform throughout the day and bring the Christmas storybook to life. Littlies can make wrapping paper, books and masks as well as a decoration to add to the display that will be hung high above the stage and lit up at night.

On Friday 17 December the Indie Twilight Markets, connecting King George Square and Burnett Lane, will be the perfect place to pick up a unique gift, lovingly created by local designers.

From Monday 20 to Thursday 23 December, forget Christmas stockings and check out four nights of tights with Brisbane’s leading circus and street performers showing off their skills for free in Christmas Tights. The performers include the young troupe from Flipside Circus and the internationally acclaimed Lady Torpedo, Big Swing Brothers & Miguel.

Convenience In Brisbane’s CBD - Metro Hotel Tower Mill

The refurbished Metro Hotel Tower Mill on Wickham Terrace – situated next door to Brisbane Private Hospital (Holy Spirit), a short walk to St Andrew’s Hospital and a wide range of medical specialists – is a popular accommodation choice for people visiting Brisbane for medical reasons or to visit loved ones in hospital.

According to general manager Graham Marks, many guests have been recommended to stay at the hotel by doctors from the local hospitals and medical practices.

“This is because of the positive feedback they have received from people who have come to Brisbane for medical treatment and have had family staying with us for extended periods.”

The distinctive cylindrical shaped hotel, a well known landmark on the inner-city Brisbane skyline, houses 80 guest rooms, all with their own private balconies that take in panoramic views extending across Brisbane. The hotel offers a variety of rooms, from twin, queen bed and family rooms (accommodating up to five people), to executive suites. Limited complimentary parking is available for guests.

Guests will enjoy the convenience of staying close to the city’s CBD and main attractions, including Queen Street Mall, Treasury Casino, Southbank Parklands, the botanical gardens and art galleries.

The hotel offers special rates for those attending hospitals and medical specialists in the area. Metro Hotel Tower Mill on Wickham Terrace is located close to the city’s transport options, just 500 metres from Central Railway Station and nearby bus stations. This makes a day trip to the Sunshine Coast’s Australia Zoo and the Gold Coast, with its theme park attractions including Movie World, SeaWorld and DreamWorld, only a 45 minute train ride away. Coachtrans offers a bus service from the airport to the hotel and back for just $12 each way.

The hotel’s licensed restaurant and bar has also undergone a transformation with a totally new rebuild and refurbishment on the ground floor. The Mill Hotel Bar and Restaurant provides a perfect setting for guests to enjoy a leisurely meal or drink after a day’s sightseeing or business meetings, with a new outdoor dining area ideal for the sunny Brisbane weather.
