Brisbane Festival Announces 2014 Program

Brisbane Festival Announces 2014 Program

With his final festival program about to kick off, Artistic Director Noel Staunton has saved the best to last.

The full Brisbane Festival program was announced earlier this week, and organisers are promising an electrifying line up of music, theatre dance and family friendly entertainment.

Artistic Director Noel Staunton said that he expects hundreds of thousands of people to attend the 73 productions and 440 performances that will occur of the festival’s three-week duration. “The quality of artists and work means Brisbane is in for a very special September,” Mr Staunton said.

This year is Staunton’s final festival, and he will sign off with a bang when the Festival’s 16-tonne firework extravaganza Sunsuper Riverfire concludes the event at the end of September.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to spend the last four years bringing everything that is great about the arts to Brisbane,” he said. “We have laid on some amazing festivals over the years but I believe we have saved the best until last.”

Having difficulty deciding which performances to attend? Limelight has picked six of the best:

Concert Hall, QPAC
September 15-20
The latest opera from Philip Glass will make its Australian debut in Brisbane. Imagining the final months of Walt Disney’s life, the production is visually spectacular and features a stunning international cast.

The Courier, Mail Piazza
September 10-21
This saucy cabaret show has been touring for months, playing to packed houses around the world. From mop ballet to ariel trapeze, this splash-filled fusion has it all.

The Cultural Forecourt, Telstra Spiegeltent
September 20-21
Tom Flanagan, energetic star of Tom Tom Crew and Circus Oz, returns with this chaotic mix of comedy and acrobatics.

Cultural Forecourt, Telstra Spiegeltent
September 7-21
Each Sunday, sit back and enjoy some hot food and cool jazz. A selection of local and national bands, as programmed by Jazz Queensland, are sure to get your toes tapping.

Whale Mall, Queensland Museum
September 23-27
Topology and one of America’s most acclaimed contemporary dance companies, Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre, come together to immerse our senses in an exquisitely beautiful blend of music and movement.

Brisbane City Hall
September 11-14
This free showcase exhibition features artworks by artists living with physical or intellectual disabilities, mental health issues, homelessness, and other challenging life situations.

Suncorp Stadium - A History
Lang Park is the original name of the site located in the Brisbane suburb of Milton, Queensland, Australia, now occupied by the major sports facility known by its sponsorship name, Suncorp Stadium (formerly Suncorp-Metway Stadium). Lang Park is also known as Brisbane Stadium when in use during AFC competitions due to conflicting sponsorship reasons.
In the late 1990s, it was decided that Brisbane needed a state of the art rectangular stadium. Suncorp Stadium was chosen as the site. The $280 million redevelopment commenced in July 2001 after Game One of the 2001 State of Origin series. The redevelopment was completed in time for the match between the Brisbane Broncos and Newcastle Knights on 1 June 2003; Brisbane's first game at Suncorp Stadium for more than a decade.
The stadium is now a 52,500 state of the art all-seater rectangular stadium, a far cry from the former Lang Park oval with two grandstands set back from a perimeter road. The only remaining stand from before the redevelopment is
the Western Grandstand. The extension of the facility resulted in the demolition of a number of buildings along Milton Road, including the former Brisbane City Council trolley-bus depot.
